Twice signed with monogram (in Russian) lower left and right Tempera on canvas National Art Treasure Non-exportable item The artist, writer, humanist and philosopher Nicholai Konstantinovitch Roerich, better known as Nicholas Roerich, first arrived in Darjeeling in 1923. From there he left on an expedition through India, Siberia, Mongolia and Tibet that was to last for the next five years. In 1928 he settled in the Kulu Valley in the Western Himalayas where he lived with his family until his death in 1947. It was during this time that Roerich painted many of his scenes, depicting the majestic Himalaya peaks and the tribal communities of the region. Whilst Kanchanjunga was a favorite subject, the present view has yet to be identified. Provenance: Satkari Banerjee; By descent to Jayant Kumar Banerjee.
