Signed and dated lower right: J. Seal/1922(?) Oil on canvas The artist Jogesh Seal studied at the Jubilee Art Academy with Hemendranath Mazumdar and Atul Bose. Together they are accredited with having kept the convention of oil painting alive in Bengal. His patrons included the Maharaja of Burdwan and Sir Rajendra Prasad Mukhopadhya. Seal’s untimely death at the age of 31 years cut short a promising career.
