Signed and dated lower right: Bikash ‘78 Oil on canvas This 1978 painting by Bikash Bhattacharjee encompasses all the surreal figurative qualities for which he is best known as well as his distinctive use of background settings. In this case the woman is shown against the rooftops of Kolkata – a scene of interconnecting planes made up of walls, parapets, sloping roofs, stairways and drain pipes, reminiscent of the cubist style washes of Gaganendranath Tagore. Literature: To be included Manasij Mazumdar’s forth coming book on the artist.
