`I like to paint figures but as they are independently acting and reacting themselves as if they are just space and forms- but that means their appearances, gesture and personality. If a meaning is formed, that is fine. More important for me is the total effect of the visual forms and visual interactions. Of course with the presence of those human figures or objects with all their vigour, complexities and character.? (Jogen Chowdhury, May 23, 1998) Jogen is best known for a powerful collection of sinuous curves set in stark spaces: His work often uses traditional materials and contours?especially cloth and yarn?but it is how he thins its lank clinging vastra like properties?how he weaves the saris or odhini of the women or the dhoti of the men into spectacular contemporary forms that tells the magic of the tale.
