Signed and indistinctly dated lower left: Hebbar Oil on canvas According to a letter from Rekha Rao, the artist’s daughter, Hebbar left for Europe on a study tour in 1949, where he studied at the Academy Julian and the Ecole Estinne in Paris, returning to Mumbai in 1951. ‘ . . The painting ‘Nude Seated lady’ must have been executed there or immediately upon his return. It is a life study. I could not decipher the date. If it is 1951, he must have painted it here in Mumbai. The European lady seems to be sporting an Indian hairdo!’
