Hemendranath Mazumdar (1894-1948)

20.5 by 60 cm.; 47 ½ by 23 ½ in.

Signed and dated lower left: Hmazumdar/1921 Oil on canvas Whilst Mazumdar painted many pictures of women wearing wet saris, this is perhaps the best known image of the subject. Provenance: Commissioned directly from the artist by a Bengal family of Kolkata circa 1920s; Thence by descent to the present owner. Compare: Heart, Intuitive Logic, 27th November 1999, lot 136 for a similar painting dated to the mid 1930s, which would suggest that this 1921 work may be the prime version.
